Today we are excited to announce that the extremely popular URL and security management extension sh404SEF will become a part of our offerings here at http://dev.anything-digital.com . Yannick Gaultier, the dedicated developer of sh404SEF, joins the Anything Digital team today in a partnership designed to ensure that sh404SEF remains a viable and innovative extension. As announced on Yannick’s blog , sh404SEF became too big for one person to handle. As part of a larger team, we fully intend for sh404SEF to return to active development with a frequent release schedule. To this end, we will release a new version of sh404SEF on Thursday, 10-September with new features and some bug fixes. The existing version and future updates will now be available on a subscription-only basis along with posting access on the sh404SEF forum. The existing FAQs are already available and in the coming days, the documentation will be transferred and expanded into a ‘user manual’. Anything Digital is committed to releasing GPL-licensed extensions and sh404SEF will join JCal Pro, Advanced Search and RSVP in this regard. Yannick has been a strong influence in the Joomla developer community, and has set a high bar for other SEF developers, especially with the security and SEO features that are standard in sh404SEF. Together, we intend to push the limits of URL and security management even further. Similar to JCal Pro development, the sh404SEF forum will be closely monitored by our team and will be used to identify bugs for addition to the sh404SEF bug tracker and subsequent patching.
Welcome to the team Yannick! I think I speak for the entire community
when I say "we expect great things from this partnership" :)

Wow that's great news. Looking forward to seeing some exciting new features over the next few months

All development and support for sh404SEF will now take place on this site. Read the post above and Yannick's blog also.
...
And now, the only really free URL and security management extension will become commercial
It is great that this extension won't die but Joomla community needs one free extension. Not everyone have money to buy all the extensions they need ...
Humm i have installed Joomla 1.5 and also VirtueMart ( i am facing url rewriting error). the urls gets redirected to same index page .help..will sef work?
...
The news are generally great, probably you could consider different editions, i.e. light one which deals with the URLs only. If you have such light version for free, this would be great.
Congrats to Yannick. ...
Extreme epic fail and the complete destruction of an extremely excellent component. Once again destroyed by a company who decides to CHARGE for a component that doesn't quite have the makings for a completely commercial component.
I know I'm going to fork the project to keep it free, I don't have a very good impression of AD and their prices are pathetically overpriced for something they did not write themselves. I gurantee that this will be taken down as soon as I post it seeings everyone only has positive things to say. Poor poor sh404sef ...
guess I'll be using Joomsef now then

Hah, my last comment got deleted! nice move guys, you've destroyed any confidence I had in your product. Time to uninstall I think.
...
I can see it - sometimes with jom_comment you have to do a hard refresh to see new comments. But as you already said you were switching to a different extension then you will have to uninstall anyway as you cant run too sef solutions at once.

Will the current plug-ins to sh404sef still work with the new version? I created a plug-in for a component that I use a lot and I hope it will continue to work.

I hope that we are not going the way of dot net nuke and other CMS systems that are ungoddly expensive to operate

I like sh404sef a lot, but I can't see paying for a component that don't completely work on my site. I am using the BibleStudy component with All Videos Reloaded popups to play the mp3s. The Popup doesn't work. If I go in to the database and look at the table (jos_redirection) the Joomla URL does not have the Itemid, if I add it to the database it works. I have try this with JoomSEF by ARTIO and native Joomla SEF and it works like it should. I would prefer to use sh404sef. I am willing to pay for a product that works. I am sure it is an easy fix.
Here is the post from sh404sef site: http://extensions.siliana.com/...c=10689.0. Here is the post from Joomla Oregon BibleStudy Component http://www.joomlaoregon.com/in...=2&id=1067 Thanks Nick ...
Hey guys, I know you want to make money fast, and you could if you charge less. Think about it, why charge $ 35 and get 1,000 people to pay it, when you could charge $ 10 and get 5,000 people to pay it?
I know there's people which can pay for it, but there's also a lot of people which simply CAN'T. Not all of us live on a whealthy country, I hope Yannick reads this and reconsiders it, I mean to release a "free" version or to charge less. Again, some of us come from poor countries, and $ 35 may not mean a lot to you people at AD, but it does to some of us. ...
Great news! But where are the great downloads from siliana.com
The redirect to anything-digital.com doesn't help in some problems with sh404sef!!! ...
I'm not willing to pay even a cent until SH404SEF is able to handle the pagination in VirtueMart.
...
Will the year long failure to present proper pagination with Mosets MTree be corrected? That is my only concern. I will purchase if that error is shown to be fixed.
...
Gees! I can see your comment. Sometimes with jom_comment you have to do a hard refresh of your browser to see new comments it's a constant complaint of mine with jom_comment and why I don't use it on my blog.
...
sh404sef was my favourite Joomla! SEF component because of duplicate link management feature. But there are lots of bugs and deficiency about component build. It's still beta. It's not modular way, hasn't advanced routers management (selecting plugin routing or 1.5 core routing for every component), not basic URL rewriting for 3rd party components. There are pagination problems. Also, duplicate url management isn't user friendly. It's not possible to unique numerical URLs for duplicated URLs. SEF URLs filtration in backend is defective. Plugin page in backend is very simple. For example, Fireboard component becamed Kunena. All plugins in only one page. Plugins must be installed manually. There isn't easy upgrade method. (Note: AceSEF is a very good alternative but it must be more mature.) Despite all of this, i use sh404sef. For paying to this component, this issues must be solved. I'll wait for updates. Thanks.
...
Congratulations to Yannick!
I only started using sh404SEF about a week ago, and so far I've found it to be an excellent extension to Joomla. I was concerned when I heard that Yannick might not be able to continue developing his project, so I'm pleased for him that sh404SEF has found a new home! ...
This is good news. However I believe there is a need for a table that displays supported plug-ins. For example;
Component | Sh404SEF-ed | Discussion (Forum link) com_example Yes anything-digital(dot)com/forum/com_example I believe this is very important especially for potential customers and for your (dev.anything-digital) part, to minimize the number of unsatisfied customers, due to not-supported component YET. For example, I would like to know if there is a working plugins for JReview, JomSocial, k2 etc. The best way to inform this, is indeed the table I was talking about. Having duplicates forum thread with the same titles is not very practical especially to potential customer. What do you think? ...
Just to make it clear:
Component|sh404sef-ed|forum discussion com_example|Yes|devanythingdigitaldotcom/forum/com_example ...
I don't think it's realistic for us to monitor all 3rd-party extensions for plugins. We will however be inviting all the plugin developers to list their extensions with us. K2 for example now natively supports sh404SEF.
Plugins can be installed in the component directories and do not need to reside within the sh404 component folder. This makes it easy for developers to keep their extension updated as their programs evolve. ...
Thumbs Up!
Do not give up this fabulous work. If this mission needs some $ to go ahead, I will support you as well. Thank you very much for the great work you already did. best wishes for you Yannick ...
Thanks for all your feedback. Please send more our way. We realize that the commercial changes will not be popular with everyone, but our reasons are explained clearly above.
Note however that links to other commercial products, as well as insults, are not appropriate here. ...
I started playing around with SEF on joomla few months back, and I use both artio and sh404sef, I would say, its good that sh404sef is continuing, but is not too please that this extension is being charged on yearly basis, I wouldn't mind if the extension is being paid-off one time like most extension for joomla. Being one of the 2 well known sef component for joomla, it is sad that sh404sef is now being fully commercial and the other semi-commercial. Why not having the same model like the other, 2 version to be provided, one with full support and the other being community supported?
just my thoughts. thanks ...
There is no way in hell I am paying for this extension until the pagination bug is fixed. It is vitally important for this to work, without it the extension is not much use at all.
...
Hi Victor,
Congratulations. This is great news. I think of the comments here are miss directed. Paying yearly allows them to continue development and keep things updated. I'm shocked that their are complaints for a $35 a year fee for a tool that does so much. It may not be perfect, but if you work within it's limits it is a great product. Could you imagine what this would cost if they poured funding into it like Microsoft or any other corporate giant. OpenSource is trying to eek by on very little and provide reliable, affordable software. You should be sending every open source project Joomla add-on $35 every time you use it in a project. Build the fee in your quote or operating expense. With out funding these project not be here and you will have to find an alternative to what you have been using for years. Sincerely, Mike ...
The important thing here is continued development and regular feature enhancement. $35 a year to use a GPL product on unlimited sites is a great deal, considering the bug fixes and support forum response here.
I'm excited to see where development for sh404 will go with this kind of infrastructure. ...
Is everyone really making that big of a deal over $35 for something that has a value that could be worth $1000s to your website. sh404 is clearly the leader in SEF and also has security features you wont see in any other extensions.
sh404 also has many small issues that need to be resolved and plugins that need to be made so i see this as streamlining the process in moving the project forward. i am personally very happy to see that it will continue other than dying by the wayside. ...
I'm looking forward to the continued development of a great component. You stated in your article you would be releasing a new version today. Any idea when it will be available for download so I can check back?
...
I would like to start out by saying congratulations to Victor and Anything-Digital for taking over a great extension. Without you, sh404sef would have died off. I would also like to thank you Yannick for all your hard work and dedication in creating, maintaining, and supporting such a powerful and useful extension. While I am not excited to see this become a commercial extension, I understand and agree with the decision made. Developers need to make a living. Yannick already devoted much personal time to this great extension and now no longer has personal time to do so. Rather than let the extension die off, Anything-Digital has graciously taken up the task of maintaining and improving this extension. Developing something this big is not free and I can see why they decided to go the commercial route. I can only hope that now this is a commercial extension that the bugs are fixed at a more rapid pace and more innovative features are implemented.
I do notice that some are complaining that the "only really free URL and security management extension" is now commercial. Yet I have to ask myself, how many of these people complaining actually DONATED? Most probably not. Because, if the most people who used sh404sef extension donated $5, there would be no reason for Yannick to move on to other things as this extension can support his livelihood. But, as often case, most people don't donate. They want something for free. I am willing to bet that most people complaining here did not even donate a single thing to the extension's livlihood. Yannick even said that donations didn't exceed $300 a year. You don't have to just donate money, you can donate your time by providing support on the forums or make a code contribution to fix bugs or add new features. How many of you are willing to donate all your free time to develop something and get nothing in return (except complaints and more requests)? Unless you donated more than $35 or provided such great support on the forum, or even contributed code that has now been included, I do not see how you are in the position to complain. And no, offering to host the project does not count. There are much better places like Joomlacode, Sourceforge, GitHub, and Google Code that can host the project for free than your server. For quite some time you have been getting a great extension for free (as in beer), the cost of it has now caught up. This brings me to my next point. I also noticed that some people brought their GPL==free beer thoughts into their comments. Stuff like "Joomla is no longer OPEN SOURCE". GPL does not mean free as in beer, the GPL does allow developers to charge for the distribution of their product. Joomla! is still open source. I do not even see how this relates to Joomla! being or not being open source. This is a 3rd party extension. Continuing on, the complaints about the price are ridiculous. $35 is not that much money considering what you get in return. Spread that cost across multiple sites and the cost per site drops even lower. The attitude of some of the comments makes me think that some people would rather see sh404sef die a slow death like OpenSEF (or its J! 1.5 equivalent SmartSEF), than pay a small fee to help continue its development. You're not being asked to pay hundreds of dollars each time you want to download the extension or each time you want to use it on a site. It is $35 to download as many times you want on as many sites as you have. If you were to develop an SEF extension yourself, it would certainly cost you more than $35 of your own time. Try and find a freelancer to do the same thing for you and it might run you in the thousands of dollars. This is not the end of sh404sef, but the beginning of something new. Best wishes to Yannick, Victor, and the rest of the Anything-Digital team. (Note: This comment has been posted on both the Anything-Digital blog and the sh404sef blog. This comment may at times reference other comments from both blogs.) ...
As announced, the first new build of sh404SEF is now available (changelog). This version mainly fixes 404 issues with extensions missing an sh404SEF plugin.
Next week ... pagination bugs! ...
I'm so glad to hear sh404SEF is moving forward. Paying the $35 will be an honor! My site has been running on it and it works like a charm. I would not think it twice to pay rather than getting one for free.
Good move and you got my complete support! kRemtronicz ...
Happy to pay for a great extension... all you who are whining get a clue. Many of the most functional and best-supported extensions for joomla are paid, including:
Jomsocial jReviews awesome templates from rockettheme, joomlart, yootheme, template plazza, joomlapraise, et al Joomlaworks Frontpage Slideshow jcalpro and now sh404... Congrats to a great decision. I am confident development will move forward, documentation and support will improve vastly, and overall sh404 will become better. I also echo the requests for better plugin management. Pretty much all of the commercial component plugins for sh404 and artio require sending files via ftp and adding lines to php files. This is quite a hassle and holds back many from proper use of SEF extensions. Please look into this. Jomsocial has already set the standard with its excellent usage of the core joomla plugin architecture for its own applications and plugins. Can't we go that way? Good luck with this ambitious undertaking. ...
@jmdundon: thx for your support.
Use of the Joomla plugin system for sh404 plugins is on its way, very likely the next release. ...
We use sh404sef on our Joomla site and love it, however with this new (paid) version, is it out of BETA? (Our version is 1.0.20 BETA). And is there going to be something for Phoca Gallery in the future? Or is that up to Phoca?
...
This is a fantastic piece of news.
Congrats Victor, I can't think of a development group I would see this project go to. Congrats also to Yannick, who will finally be able to put some bread on the table for all his work. I am a bit dissapointed at the complaints though. It seems like these people think other people should just work for them for free. Just remember that it is still GPL, so if a paid SH404 is such a terrible thing please release your own fork and support it with your own work 40+ hours a week for a few months and see if you change your mind about not wanting to be paid. Congrats again. ...
Chris,
The fact that Joomla doesn't pay their developers is why there is: a) Slower development than commercial 3rd party extensions b) Higher turnover of developers coming and leaving because they can't work for free forever c) Many of the core team making money from doing speeches and training d) Others in the core team are the owners of some of the commercial businesses you are complaining about If you can find a free version than SH404, please use it, or like I suggested in my post, why don't -you- make one. How about you work for free for other people instead of expecting other people to work for free for you. At the end of the day developers need to eat too. Being "not happy" because they want to want to give food to their families and not be your personal slave is quite ungrateful. I am sure you would quickly see why this has become paid project if you tried to do what you are demanding others do -> work for 40+ hours a week for free. ...
I understand very well some of the inherant issues involved in a project such as joomla and its extensions. Also while I'm not a participant in the development of Joomla I do work as a developer on one of the largest on-line games. Guess what, this time is 100% un-paid and I often put in 40 hour weeks. Why do I do it? Because I love the projct and have been a part of in some capacity from a user to a developer for over 10 years. So please, next time, before you make statements and assumptions about me maybe you should know me.
...
I have been using sh404sef for a long time and it pains me that this buggy and constantly 'being fixed' software now has a price tag on it. I hate how all these FREE softwares are now being charged for - and they STILL don't work right! I am very disappointed in you guys for charging for this, I will be switching to another free solution ASAP. This really sucks.
...
@cmtrig: Commercializing has allowed the original developer to continue to develop and bug-fix. You will see a rapid increase in development, something the dev could not continue under the non-commercial model.
Of course I respect your decision, but don't expect sh404SEF to remain buggy. ...
You guys really have to look up the term "Open Source". I am a developer as well, and I "eat" quote well charging end users to build and design systems for them. When I create a new software for a client that works on the Joomla! platform, I give it to other developers for free. I have even fixed and submitted those fixes for sh404sef and many other extensions and would never dream of charging for it. Our job as Open Source Programmers is to charge our CUSTOMERS, not fellow developers. Bottom line: You sold out. Very disappointing, gentlemen.
...
cmtrig,
You say you charge users to build systems for them, but extension developers are not allowed to charge for their time? If we wrote extensions purely as byproducts of other paid work, as you describe, then I could see it, but some of try to work solely on developing extensions. It is very rare that you will find a customer willing to pay for the complete development of a new extension AND let you keep and distribute the code. So rare that I would love to see some examples of a "customer" funding an extension as complex as SH404 and giving it away. What you are in fact asking here is that you get SH404 for free that you can then onsell it to other people as part of building their site. Is the $35 for a year of updates really that difficult to muster up the courage to pay for? You complain that the free version had problems, but to get around that they went paid, and you still complain! If you want top quality in a complex extension then it needs to be done full time, if it is going to be done full time then it needs to be paid for. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If maintaining a free version AND getting all the bugs out is so easy, then please fork SH404 and do it yourself instead of asking others to work for you for free so YOU can charge other people for YOUR work. I just don't get this line of thinking, I really don't. How can you keep a straight face while saying that people should give you a perfect product for free while you charge others. I give away my excess vegetables to my neighbors. That doesn't make the supermarket a sell out because they won't give me milk for free. ...
BTW all you people saying "I used SH404 for a long time but won't anymore!" you do realize that you haven't damaged the project one bit by leaving don't you?
What possible disadvantage is there to losing a customer who has never paid, and will never pay but does expect support and updates? If there was any result from what you are threatening it would only be to actually make the project more successful by leaving, by putting less strain on the developers, and giving them more free time to work on new features for those of us who are proud and happy to pay a developer a fair reward for a worthwhile product. As a paying customer I BEG YOU, if you are someone who refuses to reward other people for adding value to your life and your business, take your greedy "I demand you give to me but I won't give to you" attitudes, go away and stop bugging the developers and admins. I want value for my money. Stop damaging that value by wasting their time with your tantrums. ...
Please give me a mail when pagination problem is fixed. furthermore the pagetitle from blogarticles are not showing (i use azruls myblog 3.0). If these things work, i am willing to pay.
...
Hello!
First of all I'm only glad that sh404sef project will be continued. This is a very good piece of a software and it would be a shame to go to dust. I understand the decision about going commercial and think that many good joomla plugins deserves money. Some say $35 isn't much? We don't all live in USA or West Europe you know ... For people living there such sum is a laugh. Not quite for others. If someone isn't a developer and works on his sites for free then 35 bucks is rather significant cash. It would have been great if it would be chepaer - as someone said not 35$ but 10$. I would buy it straight away. But you can't have anything, right? I think I'll buy it after a while, though - it's worth it. A question to the developer. Do you plan a lifetime subscription for only sh404sef. I don't wan't all those products you offer and only a lifetime subscription for sh404sef. If yes, how much would it cost (approx). Thanks! ...
If $35 straight up is too much, then offer something other than cash.
e.g. help them with docs in exchange for a membership, write some sh404 plugins for extensions that don't have them. If you run a charity site, offer a link on your supporter page or in your footer for a copy. Offer to volunteer to help on the forums. Most developers are reasonable guys and if people just think outside the box for a moment, there are any number of ways you could offer $35 (or more) value to a developer so that they would be willing to give you a free license. ...
Ugh, All this arguing about a meagre $35 wastes time. Jeepuz, let the guys get on with it so they can finish the docs for those of us who need them.
...
so sad that is now a pay plug-in.. I really liked it... oh well guess I'll have to find another SEF tool
...
...but you don't like it enough to help the developer who wrote it for you put food on the table for his family...
...
This argument is so dumb - if you don't want to help development by paying a small fee, then go find something else. You're wasting time arguing about a few dollars! I paid, downloaded, installed and had SEF working in about 15 minutes...............and that on WINDOWS too, and I have a ton of extensions installed ( all paid for subscriptions too!) no problems at all. I work as a Sys Admin for an IT company and the whiners just get on my last nerve. If you cannot do the work yourself, then what the heck do you expect? Someone must fix your stuff for nothing? in their own time? I don't think so! Joomla is free and considering how massive THAT project is, paying a couple of bucks to enhance your site should not create such a frikkin beatch fest!
...
hi
just bought and attempted to install on my site and got "Can't create table 'jos_redirection'" will post on support forums, but this shouldn't happen. ...
ok, fine. sorry this really sucks. two posts in the forum no, answer. no support / solution for my problems since 7 month. I#ll buy a component with support #frustration
...
thilo38 posted two pre-sales questions, not support related. I've answered those now, apologies for the delay.
...
Hello,
I am thinking about buying the 404sef component for my website, but does it work well with virtue mart ? I am in fact interested mostly to make it work with virtue mart. Thanks for you answer. ...
I'm a great believer in that you get what you pay for in this world so this has to be fantastic news.
SEO is a Must have requirement for most installations and needs to be totally compatible with the major addons I have been fighting poor quality code for months on Joomla 1.5 before purchasing and downloading sh404SEF. I installed, tweaked and performed my smoke tests within 45 minutes and everything works splendidly Initially it didn't work in non .htaccess mode so I changed to .htaccess use and bingo - everything is sweet I think the move to bring Yannick in house and make SEO fundamenal to your product range is a really cute move as you will soon be the only realistic destination for solutions that work and work well. I personally am more than happy to pay $35 for a professional product that works immediately and saves me weeks of lost time struggling against incompetency ...
Speaking as someone who *did* give Yannick more than $35 when this component was free... I really don't care about the $35. I do care thatif I'm paying, and the benefit of that is no longer shared with *everyone* as it once was that the value lost is provided somewhere else. Potentially this is supposed to be in the form of faster development and bug fixing. That's fine. Just please show us what's been fixed and what's improved so we can see that the money really is being put to good use making sh404sef better. If you do this (which is good marketing, anyway) I'll happily buy. If you can't, why should anyone even download it, let alone pay for the privilege?
I'm really hoping this will be a great move for sh404sef although I am disappointed. The truth is bourne out by the facts, namely how development has continued. If I were anything digital, I would be getting a fix for pagination as fast as humanly possible to demonstrate the point. Personally, I just want to see the bugs fixed. You've had the code for over three months now. When will we hear a progress update on this? ...
sh404SEF does work with Virtuemart.
The keywords (Google ignores these), description and title are all set up along with a search engine friendly URL. All this works and works within about 10 minutes following installation The search engines need to see friendly URL's, titles that are relevant, meta description that is relevant, key headings near the top of the HTML (not the screen) and find bold and italicized terms that you want to be ranked on in the text ...
@Bugsbane: The changelog shows what we've done so far. Unfortunately, Joomla 1.5.15 introduced some serious issues with pagination that we are working on right now.
