I'm looking for the same thing....

in ExtCal there was a utility to EASILY add an image. This is now replaced by the wysiwyg editor, which for most people who don't edit Joomla! web sites is already confusing.

For a community calendar, how is a granny from a church ladies' group supposed to add a picture?

I don't even know how to do it myself through the front end, without hot linking to a remote image. Doh!

The only option is the wysiwyg editor.

Wow. So its usefulness as a community calendar is severely restricted. (The wysiwyg contributes largely to this too). As in going in the wrong direction. That's too bad, it seems like one of the best calendar options around for Joomla! - or it was.

So this is just for the sake of "customer feedback" - although I know I didn't even pay the five bucks for it (I would have though Smiley ) - the calendar managed through the front end with image upload was very cool. Now it only serves as a calendar that site admins can maintain. This is a terrible backwards leap! I would expect someone to come up with a calendar/bridge/port of something that will outdo jcal before too long - for group or workgroup collaboration, business scheduling, club or networking groups to post events, and communities to make announcements. It was so much more than just a shingle hanging out with a 'this is about me' list of events.

OK, I'm done. Still wishing you the best and success in the future.

Here are some links to possible solutions:

OR

I'm trying to resolve the same problem!

Just following up...

Please note that in that cited post, the recommendation:
Quote
Look for the function getTinyUrl() in mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce/libaries/classes/jce.class.php

change
$this->tiny_url = ( $mainframe->_isAdmin ) ? "../mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce" : "/mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce";

to
$this->tiny_url = ( $mainframe->_isAdmin ) ? "../mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce" : "mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce";

I changed to:
$this->tiny_url = ( $mainframe->_isAdmin ) ? '../mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce' : './mambots/editors/jce/jscripts/tiny_mce';

Note that "." there before the last string! This is found in the latest version of the JCE Mambot 1.1.6 running on Joomla 1.0.13. Also, the line [of the most current version] has just ' ... ' and not " ..." as its enclosure.

Hope it helps others - Good luck!
John

PS: New challenge: The upload image displays inside the entire webpage now, so if I can get the popup to open a window **without** a wrapper (and thereby permit a user to Browse and click to upload!!) then I have it 100% ready to upload images ..but that's a JCE issue I think! Now, over to the JCE forums....

The reason we moved to a WYSIWYG-based editor was to make it consistent with the majority of peoples user experiences. For instance, there is no image upload option when writing content on the front-end. We decided that consistency would be a better way to go so that developers could teach clients one method that worked all over their site.

That said, how many grannies are adding images from your church? Is it too much work to teach the few people you have how to use the editor? If the content providers you administer can't add an image in the editor, simply creating a piece of content must also be difficult.

Have you considered putting a few tutorials on your web site that only your content providers can access after logging in?

I understand your point of view - I just thought I'd suggest a solution to his problem.

Nevertheless, in my client's case and I suppose in many circumstances, the site publisher wants to encourage users to upload a promotional, personal or scenic image or logo along with the event details, but an editor appears overwhelming for most users; so, a simple upload button is more user-friendly than a complete WYSIWYG editor. Just my 2¢.

Thanks. Keep up your good work, V-man.
John

BTW, I'm working toward a solution for my upload-layout problem.

Hi There again.

Here's the thing. I have a community calendar with moderated registration. I don't meet or know the people - once they're registered they can post away unhindered. Presently 30+ people (church grannies and Pastors and all sorts) adding events to the calendar.
I already  have help pages for registered users only, but the fact is maintaining web content does not appeal to any of these people the way it does to you and me Smiley They're not 'content providers'
Its enought to try and guide these people through "click the 'Add Image' button, browse to the image file and press 'upload'"
So to try and have them upload an image and then link to it, when they're each only posting less than once a month.... Except you can't upload an image anyway, you have to link to an existing image. So thanks for the suggestion, but I think you may understand now why the changes make the calendar worse in this case, not better.

Cheers

Of course, the calendar won't fit every application.

However, have u used JCE recently? It's a lot easier than u describe, and also auto-resizes. I wonder how your grannies and pastors (well, let's say noobs and stop sterotyping our elders Smiley ) manage if they try to upload an image that is too large. They fire up photoshop, resize, save for web and then edit their event?

Despite our difference of opinion, I do appreciate the input here guys, keep it coming.

Hi V-Man

Well, this thread just keeps on going. Here's the simple solution: I want JCal Pro to be what I want it to be, to function according to my own needs, and I want it yesterday!
Its still a nice looking calendar, and improving in many ways for many applications. But I'm still going to pout and stamp until my newbies can upload with no previous experience necessary!
Cheers (from Hamilton - are you still a Canuk really?)

...back on track...

I use JCE's upload function but although it does upload the image it does not "select" it (and therefore it doesn't display!).

SIte: http://www.parteanimal.com/eventos/324.html (November - Click on Latin Fever Nov 20)

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Once u upload the image, select it from the list of uploaded files and adjust the parameters accordingly like any other content item.

Hmmm....

Strange that when I do that, it inserts & appears in the Description Area but doesn't save and then display. Cleared the cache, backend & frontend, and I even used HTML - the Add-Event isn't saving the image path. Tried popup and no popup; same result: no image. The parameters are set OK for the size of this image, so perhaps you know of something else I can try? I can PM you if you'd like to try yourself - let me know.

I'll check back later. Thanks, V-man!
