I'm with Mattias on this one and I quote from your own website.

Quote
Components & Modules
JCal Pro is a calendar and events management extension for the Joomla! application framework and consists of the core component and 2 modules: (i) Latest Events and (ii) Mini-calendar. It is based on ExtCalendar 2. © 2006 - 2007 Anything-Digital.com.

JCal Pro is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. All existing copyrights (above) must be prominently visible on all modified versions of this software.

Themes
Themes for JCal Pro are released under either the GNU GPL or a commercial license. Please check each theme for the appropriate distribution and modification restrictions.

Last Updated ( Tuesday, 26 December 2006 )

Only the themes are stated as being commerical and therefore I assume are chargeable.

I don't mind paying for downloads, its the sly way in which you have gone about getting my money.

Yes, we are updating the pages at the moment, and have not had time to post the announcement. Sorry about the unexpected change.

But to be clear, the GPL license for JCal Pro guarantees 'free as in freedom', not 'free as in beer'.

Since almost noone donates to this project (and thanks to those that have), we decided to try a pay-for-download model.

I think the price is fair, I hope you agree.

Yes!
It's the only way to keep the Joomla-Project in generel alive.

If no one donate the coder, then no one will code for the project...

I think the price is fair but the terms suck. I have used JCAL for over a year and I admit I am one of the slackers that have not donated. However, I am willing to pay for a copy of JCAL but not for limited time access. What happens if I misplace my copy and need to download a new one in 2 years. Yes there might be updates but I should not be forced to upgrade just to download a copy I already paid for. Perhaps the better way to use a pay model would to charge for installation support for 90 days. Then if we need a copy of JCAL we can email you for you to send us a copy of the version we paid for. I for one am willing to pay at least $15.00 but I want some discussion on this matter.

Garrett

PS: Thanks for the hard work you do.

Sorry Garrett (and anyone else who has a problem with this announcement), in my opinion you are wrong. They have every right to decide how to distribute THEIR software. $5 is extremely reasonable. And if you lose your copy in two years and need a new copy, consider the extra $5 as a donation toward continued development. Think about it, if you are willing to spend $15, you could lose the extension twice and spend the same $15 over 6 years! I'd be happy to spend $5 on any of the currently free extensions I use, to help ensure that they will be here in the coming years. Money makes a great incentive.

There are many dev's who charge $50, $75 or more for an extension. Many of us just can't do that. If they were to charge a more reasonable fee they would likely make as much, if not more, as their sales would increase tremendously.

Joomla is in crisis with many commercial dev's leaving over the GPL. I see this as a sign that these guys will stick around, and development will continue.

I received an email about the announcement, and I came to this forum to let the dev's know I understand their decision. Now I'm off to purchase it, even though I have a copy.

Thanks for writing guys. I appreciate all the feedback. Decisions like this are not made quickly so all your comments are helpful in the long run.

Oh come on guys "JCal Pro 1.5.x series hits download mile stone
On March 29, 2007 the 1.5.x series of JCal Pro surpassed the 10,000 downloads mark" - kerching!

Extcal was dead so you greatfully picked it up and ran with it - but to start charging for it!

Guys I will be sticking with the version I have ... sorry but Open Source Matters and thats where you got it.

Not sure what kerching means...but the source is freely available to you and everyone. That's what open source is about in my mind and as per the GPL.

Kerching means money! "To satisify the terms of the GPL, the JCal Pro source code can now be found at http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jcalpro/" I cant find it. I am not having a go at the fact that you may want to cover operating costs but are you trying to make this a viable business opportunity - if so then thats fine - just tell us.

I have noticed the subscription/donationware thing appear again and again at joomla.org just tell us straight if its a commercial product then fine.

And once again, thankyou for picking up extcal

I don't see it in the files section.

I may be a newbie to this forum, but I'm not to Joomla and GPL applications.

I think a little more thought should have gone into how you did the cross over to a payment for download scheme. When you start charging, people are less forgiving; regardless of the amount being charged.

I think most would agree that a payment of $5(US) is not much for want you get (a great piece of code if the reviews are to be believed). Its the fact that ALL the way to getting to the download its listed as a GPL FREE for download.

If only I had signed up 24 hours earlier!!!

I assumed it was obvious that the goal was to make money, I certainly never mentioned operating costs. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

The reason the source code was published is that this must be readily available, whether or not you are charging a distribution fee. Since the code isn't available here now as a freely accessibly download, we must provide it elsewhere as per the terms of the GPL. We weren't trying to obfuscate our motives. We simply made a business decision, and had to publish the code to stay in compliance with the GPL. No more, no less.

The files you are looking for are in the SVN tab.

I just wanted to point out that we are not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. JCal Pro is GPL, and all are free to release their own copies. We are hoping that the wider community respect us enough to not do this, but we cannot predict the response from the community.

We also don't want to paste dollar-signs all over the place. So, we changed the business model, posted two announcements on the web site and sent an honest announcement to the community. I think that was reasonably thorough.

However, i do see how one could be mislead with the costs, especially if they've been here before and downloaded without the fee. To address this, I updated this link to indicate the subscription fee: http://dev.anything-digital.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=3&Itemid=53 .

I can understand your reasons and 5$ isnt the world. But for me, honorary making some no budget homepages for churches and scouts, even without a credit card, it will/must be the point to overthink using of component. Maybe, I would give you 5$, but i wouldnt join paypal just to do so. A pitty is just, the change in business model, if something used to be feeless loadable its always a bad surprise if you have to charge for it the other day, because it brings own planning in disorder. But its your decision and i have to respect it. Thanks.

Just to note: You don't need a paypal account to use your CC with paypal. Just click the link to continue without an account.
