If want to keep up with the latest version, I recommend
the 1 year subscription. If you only want to spend $5, then stick with the latest stable version.

In my opinion, this is quite fair and offers a range of options. It's simply a choice.

you mentioned in another post:

As a reminder to those not familiar with the GPL license of JCal Pro, it guarantees "free as in freedom", not "free as in beer". To satisfy the terms of the GPL, the JCal Pro source code can now be found at http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jcalpro/.

There are no source code files avilable to download at this address http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jcalpro/

I have also helped in polish UTF translation which is included I beleive in 1.5.2 version already - why do i have to pay for the subscribtion if i already helped you in some way :-( and you use my translation to make money ....

You certainly don't have to pay. The files are on the SVN tab at the url u posted.

You'll see your files there also in the languages directory.

So, the software is freely available (actually, posting them in a public place not required by the GPL. I put them there so others would not have to request them, which is the typical work flow for satisfying the GPL).

We routinely give free accounts and free access to regular contributors. If you have more to offer, perhaps we can work something out. However, keep in mind that you benefit repeatedly from my inclusion of your changes in the source code so you don't have to re-translate after each upgrade. To say you are not getting anything in return when the files are freely available is not accurate IMHO.

We distributed the current stable for months as a free download. We moved to a  fee-based distribution model a few months ago without a version change/release. A new version (1.6.x beta) is due out in the next 24-72 hours.

Those guys make a great job  ...

I had a problem few days ago with the Jcal component and V-man answers me in less than 2 days.

I don't think you could find anywhere else a component like this and a support for this price. You know the time we would spend trying to do a component like this one ?

They even put 2 options to pay. One for a day and the other for more...
And rates are very affordable for all of us... well I think!

Joomla couldn't exist without coders ...  We must never forget this !

Thanks again guys for your great job ...

OK, the fee is fair. the devs cannot eat the air to live and code the components for free. Those who already used jcal and really nead it will not hesitate to pay $5 for such an excellent stuff, but the cost will prevent lots of new users from trial and test. I don't know if you've already put a free version somewhere for trial purpose. This will help to "market" the product a lot, because users are ready to pay only if they are sure of what they are paying for.
I'm taking care of a site for my friend, from setting up, upgrading, adding new features,.... completely free, and I'm considering using jcal. If my friend needs the functionalities of jcal for his website, and if it works fine on mambo 4.5.5, I'm not reluctant to pay from my pocket. Considering the time and nerves I have put (for free) into this (my friends' ) website, and the time and nerves the you have put in jcal, $5 is nothing.
By the way, mambo 4.5.5 is also a stable version, and lots of people are still using it because there's no need to move to 4.6.2, why didn't you make jcal competible with 4.5.5?

Thanks for your great work.

Thanks for the support anibal and hwang.

@hwang: we had some difficulties getting 4.6.2. and 4.5.5 both working, but we tried. Perhaps we will expand compatibility in the future.

FWIW, $10 or $20 one time is nothing. But $10 every six months, and I have to walk away.

There is no need to upgrade to every version, as long as you are using a stable version.

Most people save the files on their computer, and if their subscription expires, only re-subscribe if their is a compelling feature addition.

I'm taking it all in and agree that developers need to get compensated. I donate on all the modules I use with Joomla and try to develop a rapport with the developers, have access to forum.
I think if Joomla Developers want to gain additional support, they should follow the Red Hat model and offer automatic upgrades WITHIN Joomla, special forum access, additional individual support, and other ADDED VALUE services (and mods)
that are not otherwise available.

I think that the developers should openingly contribute to the Joomla CORE project and show that they are contributing. That would be the gold standard of a developer.

Also, you should throw in a free download of another plugin once in awhile to whet our appetites and sweeten the subscription. If the prices stay in line where they are, I think it is a fair model. If you all get greedy and start jerking us around, I suspect your level of success will reflect that type of business practice.
Anyway, I'm in and wish you continued success. Your code is poetry.

Much appreciated for the comments/support and I hear you RE an occasional freebie. Another incentive we are considering as our repertoire expands is a discount for combined subscriptions.

Glad you like JCal Smiley

What's the problem with the fee? Is that 5$ so much? I don't think so. I you find useful for your site and your customers can use it, I really think 54 is fair enough.
What I didn't like is to find that after the payment, the component does not work with the 1.5 release when it's supposed to be.
Anyway, 5$ is less than what we're supposed to pay for a full featured component like this one.

Support for Joomla 1.5 is only available in the highly experimental JCal Client 1.6 beta. As stated in many places, the beta is "use at your own risk". However, included in the JCal subscription is 1.5.3 Stable for Joomla 1.0.x.

I'm shocked you don't have a "dev/test" version. I needed a calendar for my joomla site and found you on rocketthemes.com. What a kewl site (rocketthemes.com)!

You where listed as a top download (rocketthemes.com) and I registered to download your software and can NOT. I'm pissed b/c of two reasons. With a little research you screwed your own client base and me. THANKS SO MUCH.

Please update your posting on rocketthemes.com. Don't make people mad if you changed your biz model. That is low and way DIRTY.

Cheers,

I don't have a listing on Rockettheme. If I am on a list there, it's not my doing (at least not to my knowledge). Could you please provide a link? Are there any other people on the list who have paid subscriptions/extensions?
