Please discuss JCal 1.5.x native for Joomla! 1.5.x in this thread.

Given the overwhelming number of requests we have received, we are pleased to announce that we are currently working on a JCal Pro 1.5.x release that will run natively on Joomla! 1.5.x.

This release will not require the legacy plugin, and has been completely re-tooled to take advantage of the Joomla! 1.5 model-view-controller architecture.

We hope to release a beta version by the end of the month. As a result, development of Joomla 1.6.x has been delayed. There were simply too many issues to deal with both the new features AND Joomla! 1.5.x compatibility.

Well, in my opinion, the development of a Joomla1.5-campatible version takes really long time. Especially if one considers that you indirectly sell this component.
I think nobody is going to complain about this fact if you develop this software as a free version without any additional fees. But as long as you raise any fees, there will be people like me which favor a general release plan and speedy adaptation of architectural changes of the host application.
Please asses this position as a recommendation of an experienced software developer.

We are not changing the subscription fee. We went to work in full force on "speedy adaptation of architectural changes of the host application" as soon as Joomla! 1.5 went stable. Since the Joomla! core team provides no dates on it's roadmap, it is difficult to predict this as I am sure your experience tells you Smiley

To give you an example from the commercial world that you allude to in your post, did you know that Adobe Acrobat was incompatible with OS X Leopard for a full 3 months following Leopards release? And how many programmers do you think Adobe employs?

Seems like this decision is taking one step back instead of a step forward. The Joomla legacy plugin was greatly improved in the final iterations prior to stable release. While it would be nice to have JCal as a 1.5 native extension, I would rather see effort put into working out bugs in JCal 1.6, and worry about getting it to native status at a later date.

These things are all a balance. 1.6 has not changed, so no 'step backwards'. Just a brief delay.

Converting 1.5 to the MVC structure also gives us good experience for when this is done for 1.6.

The main issue is that with so many new features in 1.6, it was just impossible for us to juggle all the balls at once. The chosen path is, in our opinion, a way to acheive success on both compatibility with J1.5 as well as provide a stable set of new features.

Not to beat a dead horse, but for me the only real element that JCal is missing is the iCal import feature, which I believe was on the table for 1.6?

I've got 3 Sites currently running JCal on "Joomla 1.<5", 2 more in the works.  All of them are for clients who run Macs and manage their calendars with iCal.

My 2 cents?  I really hate to see this functionality delayed while work is done on a Joomla version that all 3 of the hosts I work with are not yet supporting. The benefit to a native JCal for Joomla 1.5 for me is "0" for the indefinite future.  The benefit to an iCal import is immediate.

Major database changes are needed to provide accurate import and export. Since this has to be done for 1.6, the further delay was not acceptable given the Stable 1.5.x Joomla! release.

I myself am not creating any new sites for 1.0.X .  I expect Fantastico to catch up with 1.5 shortly, but in the meantime I"m happy to install it myself.

I'm glad we'll have a native 1.5 calendar available, as there are a few sites I work with that are only in legacy for JCal.

What I really want is the event server... but I'll have to just wait patiently until everything else gets ironed out, I guess.

That's good to know V-Man. I'm no programmer so anything that makes my life easier, I'll get behind.

Hi V-Man,

Probably the most irritating question someone could ask you.. any idea when the J1.5 native version is likely to appear?

Even a rough guestimate Smiley

You say it would be the end of this month.. but we're practically here now so.. not pushing.. honest.. just wondered.. as I am sure many others are of a possible when..ish  Tongue

I think the version of JCal on J.1 is great .. but I have now made the decission to totally go with J1.5 for all new web developments.. and I am trying where possible to avoid legacy mode.. which isn't easy..

Cheers P

Hey,

I am just testing the alpha internally. The developement is a little tougher than we first thought (of course). End of the month looks to be premature, but hang in there. I am still hoping for weeks, not months.

Can we get an update since the original release date was supposed to be the end of February and we're now in the middle of March? As the original post said, it'd be nice to have a release if you're going to charge for the product claiming that it works with Joomla 1.5 and we (me and you) can't figure out why we're getting the same message as a few other people about the size of the zip file.

Thanks,
