I was wondering if there is a way to purge old events from the calendar and database. I would like to be able to do maintenance and delete all events that are older than a certain date, like one year, that aren't needed anymore and can be removed from the calendar.

Jcal itself only allows you to make past events (ie all events older than today to be unpublished. If you want to remove them from the dv itself you would need to use a tool such as phpmyadmin and delete them from the db direcctly.

How do you make them unpublished? I've never bothered with it, but now that I look, I don't see any settings for automatic unpublishing. Deletion would be better.

In the joomla sense they are not unpublished but the option "show past events" stops them being displayed which is functionaly the same thing

Gotcha.
Unfortunately you can't do this on the backend or filter by date, so you end up having a hard time finding the current and soon-to-occur events there. The list starts with the oldest and ends with stuff 5 years from now if you have a lot of long-term recurring events. One more reason to look forward to the next version!

If you upgraded to the latest version (2,2) you will see alot more filters in the event list, including the ability to only show past events or upcoming events.

Thanks, missed that. Is there a newsletter, blog area/RSS for version update notices?

There is a newsletter subscription module on the right hand side of this page and you can also subscribe to the announcements forum.

I get the newsletter; the announcement board is what I need to get that info pushed to me. Thanks.
