Title: Possible additions, please post feature requests here
Post by: V-man on January 08, 2008, 03:49:31 PM
Feature additions we are considering:

- add keyword in meta title
- date range filtering for content search results (example (http://dev.anything-digital.com/Forum/Advanced-Search-Installation-amp-Configuration/2462-Feature-Request-Date-Range-Filtering/))
- page navigation displayed only when needed
- specify min and max # of characters in search term (partial example (http://dev.anything-digital.com/Forum/?topic=2445.msg6995#msg6995))
- set default ordering of results (newest, oldest, etc...)
- collapse extra spaces before search proceeds (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,227388.0.html)
- allow result filtering by specific category/section
- specify default search type (any words, all words or exact words)
- do not count spaces as characters when determining minimum # of search characters to prevent searching for individual letters of the alphabet (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,223464.0.html)

Hey,

From what I've seen so far you can choose what content types you are searching for (ex. articles, forum etc.) by the use of checkboxes, how about to make it possible to choose by clicking on links on top of the search box, how it is done in most of the sites (google, yahoo).

A very good example is on this website http://boardreader.com/ (http://boardreader.com/). And if you could include a styling similar to that site and the content type switch without a page refresh would be much appreciated. ;D

I really need a dropdown menu that allows you to choose which category you want search. Are you planning on implementing this soon?

- allow result filtering by specific category/section

yes I agree,
I would like to show in différent part of my site a unique category off the calendar and the user will not be able to click somewere in this view to get to the others category.

- allow result filtering by specific category/section

Category choice is a good one, as well as month choice or yearly view, so you don't have to scroll through month by month.

I would also like the ability to turn off time display for some or all events because often when planning the calendar way ahead of time, you don't know the specific time of some events. Right now I can turn off time display in all views except event view. It would be great to be optional (like recurring is optional etc).

The ability to directly link the title to an outside page (url) would be great too. This is currently possible by using <a href> in the title but the field is limited in characters. I haven't messed with editing the field size so I might be able to do this myself. (PS edited to say that I did find where to edit the field lengths, and it works great for monthly view, but flat views or event view shows the html code instead of just the title, even though the link still works)

Thanks for a great component and great support.

Cheryl

Title: Re: Possible additions: Search in categories/sections

I second the request of implementing search by Category/section. This is a sorely missed feature of the basic Joomla search and conceptually I don;t see how hard it can be. It is a simple additional query parameter to add to the search.
What is harder is filtering the categories to give the administrator the capability to only open up certain categories to the search and leave others out. In this regard, ideally you would have 2 choices:
Category ID by exclusion
Category ID by inclusion

Ideally both would be useful. That way those with few categories can use the inclusion one but those with many categories can choose the exclusion.

At this point, I'd take anything though.

One question:

I bought the developer's special mainly to test the advance search in the hope that it already had this feature included. Will I be able to download the update or will I need to buy it again?

Thanks

In regard to the section/category search, a friend and I developed a plugin (that only works on the regular com_search default) that searches by 1 category. It's still very rough, but it works. It does not work with advanced search though. So we are going to look into doing the same to the advanced search plugin and create a plugin that can allow searching inside a single category.

Eventually, we would like to expand it to more than one single category, but that presents some logic challenges.
For instance, I may not want to show the user all my categories (especially if I have some that are temporary, unpublished, etc).
In the case of the site I am working on now, I really would not want to give the user any capability to even know what other cats are available, let alone let them search in them.

So if such a plugin can be designed to allow more than one category search at the time, it would have to have some sophisticated admin logic to allow maximum flexibility.

Alternatively, we were thinking ogf creating
search A
search B
Search C
etc.
plugins and let the user install them and configure them as needed. In the process eliminating a lot of backend work and making them more flexible and focused.

If we can adapt the current plugin we have created to advanced search, we may be able to release a set of plugins quite soon with this system. I realize is not a fancy solution, but the alternative would be very time consuming and probably make just as many people unhappy.

With the plugin set solution we would also be able to have them work with the mod_adv_search_selector module in a way that a more comprehensive plugin would not be able to without duplicating it.

I am looking forward to see what your solution is going to be like, but in the meantime we are going to keep working on our little search plugin.

Please include a title searchbot in Advanced Search. I know that the standard content search looks in the title field too, but if a common string occurs many times in a large number of articles, it would be more user friendly to be able to just look for it in the title field.

Wondering if an additional filter could be added in the backend, for event kind? (e.g., Static / Repeat (parent) / Repeat (child) / Repeat (detached))I have a slew of recurring events that of a set-and-forget nature and so I really don't need to see all the children cluttering the back-end display. If I could filter so that All/Static/Parent/Child could be displayed, that'd be great.

The ability to sort on that field would even be helpful, although not ideal.

Thanks!

It is important to define a list of stop words in order to limit wrong results. An example actually if I search "queen of england" the word "of" is searched.

I'll second jacy on this, we have recurring weekly events and really need to hide the 'children'. It's impossible to organize events on the backend when they lost in pages and pages of 'children' events. Is this a 'bug'? I'm not sure, but if anyone knows a quick workaround to hide these children events it would be great!

Agreed - just bought this module assuming it already had this feature...  Not a happy bunny. :-\

It would be really awesome if this could allow you to have saved searches - like you do on property websites etc - which allow the user to be emailed however frequently you set with new search results for their keywords.

I've not yet found a search component which could do this so it'd be a niche of the market that hasn't been cornered.

I believe many of the property components have this feature, so I assume the code is already in existence.
