I'd love the ability to have multiple (independant) calendars on one site. I'm not relishing the thought of having to do a multi-site, just to have multi-calendars.

I want multiple calendars too, because I want groups in SMF to be able to make a group calendar.

I'd like this feature too, so I'm currently working on it, and it will be ready in a few days.
It will work similarly as Categories, each Event will have to be assigned to a specific calendar.
Then, upon creation of a new item in a menu (JCal Pro component being the 'destination' of the item), you'll have to choose which calendar should be displayed for this specific menu item.

I will keep you informed in that thread.

This would be awesome... I'm trying to setup a calendar for different cities and the categories are just very difficult to use in this scenario.

This is the ONLY currently-missing feature to prevent my using JCalPro on a site under development. It needs to show events in several regions, with the same event-type categories in each region. This is doable in a multi-calendar setup, in which the user can select each region's calendar (or an "ALL REGIONS" option), and then select one or all event categories within the region(s).

This feature is available on another calendar, but it's butt-ugly compared to JCalPro.

This is a big job folks. Sorry but i don't think this is in the cards any time soon for JCal.

Work is going on...
I should release a "multiple calendars" version of the component soon, that way all of you who are interested in this feature could test it.

I'm not sure I understand all of your needs, but I'll try to implement some of them if they are not too time-expensive.

@V-Man : Will it be possible to get my work integrated into JCal Pro ?

If it's stable and W3C-valid, we can integrate it. My concern is tat u will have to create more database fields, which may pos an upgrade problem.

In any case, u might want to wait a few days so you can use 1.5.2 as your codebase.

Syldes - I have a working site that I can test this on, so let me know when you have the code close. After reading V-man's reply, hopefully you have your code well documented so that it can be easily integrated into JCal Pro 1.5.2 when it is released.

Syldes, reading my previous post I can see that it wasn't very clear, so let me try again.

I'm looking for a "layered" calendar system, similar to the one available (at a cost) in Thyme. Every event is associated with both a calendar AND a category within the calendar. Front-end users can select which of the calendars to display -- or have the option of showing events from all calendars simultaneously. So a user could select to display:

(1) All events from all calendars
(2) All events from a single calendar
(3) A single event category from all calendars
(4) A single event category from a single category

Is this congruent with what you're working on?

Thanks!

@borisgoodenough : Well, sort of.
Here is how it works today : once a new menu item is created and configured to use component JCal Pro, you can choose whether you want this menu item to display all calendars or a specific one.

If the menu item is configured to show all calendars, it works similarly as if there were no multiple calendars setup. For example, if you click on a category name (just below the calendar), it will display all events from all calendars which belong to this category.
If the menu item is configured to show a specific calendar, clicking on a category will display only events from this specific calendar.

So the 4 items you asked for are available, but only through several menu items (one for each calendar + one for all calendars), which may not suit your needs.

Is this behaviour OK for you or do you need, for example, a drop-down box juse after the "Search" link where you could choose which calendar to display ?

Syldes, I see what you're doing -- creating multiple calendars that feed off one database, and you control which one users see by what you put in the menu link.

That's not my ideal setup; a drop-down in the component itself works better for my needs, so users could easily flip from one calendar to another. But I could certainly make your type of arrangement work by creating submenu items, each linked to one of the calendars.

And since I'm not doing the development...  Grin

Syldes, How is this project going? I really appreciate you taking on this effort.

Also I just want to make sure that I didn't misunderstand you. Basically your setup will allow the admin to create many calendars and choose which ones to make available to which users? Therefore this is not really the same as allowing each member to have access to his own PRIVATE/PERSONAL calendar?

Thanks again.

rasheed21,
The project is mostly ready, I'm waiting some feedback from borisgoodenough which is doing some tests on it.
I will release my modifications in this thread when his tests will be over, hopefully in the next few days if everything is ok.

As of today, admin can create as many calendars as wanted, but there is no direct mechanism to make some of them specific to some users. But you can use Joomla! built-in access rights to menu items (public, members or special).

So this is not a way to have each user access to his own PRIVATE/PERSONAL calendar.
